EERAM : A SUPERNATURAL THRILLER : Above Average

EERAM : A SUPERNATURAL THRILLER

Don't read the text inside the
&
tag if u don't want to know the suspense elements

Theatre : Thiyagaraja
Status : 75%
Showtime : 11.15am(FDFS)

After watching the first half, I was really in a confused state about how I can write the review of this movie without losing its suspense to the viewers. But the second half made me to write this in the way as follows.

Story begins in an apartment from which water comes out from E6 flat where no response was there even after calling many times by the security gaurd. Police found Ramya Balakrishnan(Sindhu Menon) dead in bathtub. One policeman asks Vasu(Aadhi) to come and confirm as the dead one is Ramya as he knows that they were in love few years ago. A suicide note was found in her body covered in a plastic cover saying like she herself is committing suicide. Vasu investigates the case and collects details from the near apartment people. All were saying like she was having relationship with some other guy and committed suicide when her husband discovered that. Vasu remembers his college days and his love life in between these. They didn't unite because her father didn't want a police officer(police officer in future) to marry her. Two more murders happens who were staying in that apartment. Vasu finds WATER as the source of medium used to kill in all the murders. Vasu starts investigation
Towards the interval, Police chases and finds the so said secret lover of Ramya there in Udhayam theatre. Aadhi reaches there and finds that guy hitting his head himself to the mirror in gent's toilet. Vasu realises then its none other than Ramya's ghost who uses water as a medium to kill. The la HOLLOW MAN effect used then was good. Second half is Vasu's meeting with a doctor who talks to ghosts. He asks Vasu to believe in ghosts. By the time Ramya's sister played by Saranya Mohan comes to city for her father's operation. Vasu shifts to the apartment where murders happened along with his mother. Saranya too comes there. Spirit of Ramya enters Saranya's body and tells him what happened in her life and what lead to her murder and why she had killed the other people too. From the first 30 minutes itself we are known to the original villain none other than her husband Balakrishnan played by Nandha because of his doubt on his wife. How she takes revenge is the rest of the story [end of spoiler]

Vasu played by Aadhi of Mrugam fame(Mrugam : the movie in which director Sami slapped Padmapriya) had played the role of a college guy and a police officer very well. If the physique of the police officer role was some more good, then it could have been much more tougher look. Nandha as Balakrishnan has nothing much to do as an irritating character which we have seen Raghuvaran as psychic in some movies. Saranya has nothing much to do, again a sister character and two scenes. And finally Ramya played by Sindhu Menon walks away with all applause. She was too good as a homely college girl, as a lover girl and as a loyal wife
, even as a ghost though she is not shown as such.
Among technical side, Art direction needs to be specially mentioned as it was superb in every frame(Don't know the name of the guy). Camera by Manoj Paramahamsa was superb. Also editing in first half, second half needs trimming and it needs to be as tight as first half. Music by Taran.S is good, especially "Mazhaye" song and the BGM which adds to the mood of the scene. The cloudy sky colour tone given to the whole movie is superb.

Director/Script Writer Arivazhagan was able to make the movie interesting in the first half as it was a package with murders, mystery, investigation, college life, love and even one song "Mazhaye.." which was picturised beautifully. Second Half was just average with no interesting twists, a predictable one only. WATER plays a key role in the movie as it is there in each and every scene in the movie. Director seems to have given much more importance to visuals than the screenplay. The storyline appears a cliched one.
A ghost who kills one by one those who were reason for her murder.
If director had done some more home work on the second half script it could have been an edge to seat thriller. Dialogues are good. Director Shankar should be appreciated again for presenting another promising director through his 'S' Pictures.

SUPERB FIRST HALF, AVERAGE SECOND HALF

Verdict : Above Average

PUTHIYA MUGHAM : AVERAGE

PUTHIYA MUGHAM

Theatre : TVM Sree Padmanabha
Status : Around 50 persons in first class
Showtime : 2.30pm

A movie which was released on the label like it'll be similar to mass masala entertainers in Tamil/Telugu Cinema, but sad to say except in introducing action sequences and placing song sequences, it is no where near the other south Indian language movies.

Story of the movie is a half baked one for a mass entertainer. Krishnakumar/Kichu from Palakkad goes to college in Kochi to do his B.Tech. There he impresses everyone with his musical skills which helps him to get a lot of friends including Priyamani. Bala who is the tyounger brother of Saikumar and Shammi Thilakan, the land mafia criminals there. He's in love with Priyamani. Because of pressure from parents, Priyamani agrees to marry Bala after her studies. But certain incidents made Bala think that Prithviraj & Priyamani are in love which forces him to react to Prithvi. As a result of that Prithvi gets hospitalised because of the mental shock that happened in the childhood haunted again. Again he comes back to college and this time Prithvi with high voltage reacts as predictable. The second half only shows how Prithvi manages to win over the three brothers in three action sequences.

Prithvi was good as Kichu in Palakkad episodes(except the first scene mrudangam look). He was good in acting while his hand was shaking when tries to play mrudangam when he comes back from hospital. He looks perfect as mentally challenged boy in the wheel chair in the hospital episode. But from pre interval episode, the actor in Prithvi comes only in two sequences when Meera was taken back to her home from Jagadeesh's house. As a hero, Prithvi was good in doing action sequences. Meera Nandan & Priyamani has nothing to do. Bala got a powerful character and was good though lip sync problem was there in sequences. Saikumar & Shammi Thilakan has got usual roles and in this movie, they are wasted with limited scenes and not so powerful chaaracters. Jagathy, Jaffer Idukky, Nedumudi Venu, Kalashaala Babu, Anil Murali, Jagadeesh, Sona Nair, Vijayaraghavan all are wasted with insignificant roles. Undapakru(Ajayan) was notable in limited scenes, especially intro. Sudheesh was good with his oneliners. Necomer Venky was ok only.

Among technical side, the real winner is action director Anal Arasu. The action choreography is neatly done but badly directed. Every action sequence is repeated 5-6 times in each action episode which makes the viewers boring & irritating. This happens in all episodes. Especially in the final action sequences, the goons were simply moving left and right which became a pure comic scene. Also when Priyamani moves to next floor in constructon site, I don't know why director didn't ask people working there in the frame to move away from the frame. I still don't know why Saikumar didn't fight when Prithvi was fighting with goons with him. Also in the police station episode Vijayaraghavan was simply standing when Prithvi was beating other policemen. Keralapolicente kayyil oru gun polumille??? atleat to threaten him. BGM was ok only. The intro bgm of Undapakru was later used for action sequences. Diphan was able to make the movie engaging. Deepak Dev's song "Picha Vecha.." was the main calling card of the movie.

People who watch only Malayalam movies or movies once in a while will like this one as the action sequences in the movie will appear great or stylish to them because of the visual treatment given. But for others it'll be another mass masala which lacks a proper script to make it an edge-to-seat thriller which is the key component in Tamil/Telugu movies in addition to visual treatment.

Premam moolam Priyamani moolam Prithvirajnum Balakkum Kalaham OREvidham Puthiyamughathil sulabham.

KANTHASAMY : BELOW AVERAGE

KANTHASAMY

Theatre : TVM Anjali
Status : 98%
Showtime : 6.30pm(Film started at 6.00)

Finally I decided to watch the much hyped movie after a series of release date shifting and lots of negative reviews from audience and positive reviews from medias like SIFY, INDIAGLITZ.....

CBI officer Kanthasamy wants to reduce the difference between the rich and the poor, a la Sivaji approach. So he distributes the black money ceased from rich ones to the needy who writes their needs in a paper placed in the temple tree. For this, he himself become a superhero with the help of his team. A CBI officer played by Prabhu is investigating the case of Kanthasamy which he believes is a fake one. When Vikram ceases money from Aashish Vidhyarthi, he acts as if his half of his body is dead. His daughter Shreya wants to take revenge on Vikram. After a series of incidents, they comes to know that Vikram is the superhero. Aashish Vidyarthi makes a 50-50 deal for the amount he ceases in future. Vikram & Shreya goes to Mexico to get money from a don Pichumani. How he handles the case there and the villain played by Mukesh Tiwari is the rest of the movie. In between unwanted bad comedy sequences from Vadivelu.

The opening scene of Vikram with Mansoor Ali Khan itself is a big failure in which the superhero mannerisms are repeated. Shreya is just for glamour and is a big minus in the movie as the character is unwanted. CBI head played by Krishna(father of Mahesh Babu) is good. Prabhu repeats his Billa role. Mukesh Tiwari was not upto the mark while Aashish Vidyarthi was OK. The Mexican villain Alex was a failure. Overall the film is a Vikram show but his role as a woman and all were good in make-up, but the screenplay for which the characters are introduced made those bore and irritating. I saw the trimmed version of the movie where except two scenes all other Vadivelu scenes were removed. Those scenes too were irritating. As IB officer, director Susi Ganesan as actor also is a failure.

All the song sequences of the movie are misplaced and the songs repeated some old Tamil songs' tunes. Dialogues were not good except the Vikram-Shreya first scene and later Poda-Podi ones. Other dialogues like Alex telling Vikram in Mexico like "Mexicovile Pichumaniye theriyaatha aale illai" were pure comic ones. Colour grading only helps to get headache especially the brown tone in Mexicon episode. Screenplay was not there in the whole movie other than a show of luxury in every scene.

On the whole watch the movie in a DVD if you have no other DVDs with you then.

Producers spent 40crores for the movie. Among that 1.25crores were for Shreyas dress alone. But ellaam keeriyathaayirunnu. Keeratha orennam first Vikram-Shreya scenil aval thanne keeri kalayukayum cheyyyunnu. Dressinodu ithrayum allergy ulla mattoru nadi Tamil cinemayil vere undo ennariyilla.
